Learn a little more about Ashtanga Yoga

ASHTANGA YOGA

Ashtanga (pronounced ash-tanga) Yoga is an ancient system of therapeutic yoga postures - asanas and is a classical form of hatha yoga.

Each posture is linked to the next through a series of flowing movements called vinyasa.

Postures and vinyasas are woven together by breath - ujjayi pranayama.

In order to protect the centre of the body from possible strain and injury, to enable the correct movement and proper alignment, a number of locks or bandhas are applied throughout the practice.

These four elements are the core of the system, rapidly producing deep inner heat, opening and purifying the body from a cellular level. Every muscle is systematically toned and in combination with the breath every cell refreshed. With regular practice flexibility, strength and stamina are achieved. At the same time, fluid, smooth breathing develops which co-ordinates the flow of movements. This leaves the nervous system calm, with a concentrated and vibrant mind. The practice is dynamic, breath-focused and rewarding.

The whole of the first series has some 70+ postures which will take from 6 to 10 weeks to learn at a weekly 2 hour class. The sequence does not vary (though postures can be modified to suit personal requirements) and is quickly memorised.

All movements into and within a posture are intimately associated either with an in or out breath. The core of the practice is to remain focused on the breath and the locks throughout.

The practice is non competitive and at no time should it be painful. If you experience discomfort, back out of the posture and adopt a modified posture where there is no pain (please ask in class for advice). If at any point you wish to rest, miss out the next posture but maintain the muscular locks and breathing until you rejoin the group. This will maintain the heat and flexibility in your body.

All classes end with a period of relaxation which helps to seal the practice.
