Relieving back pain

"Back disorders are the most common form of ill health at work"

Consider the impact of Back Pain alone:
Simple backache represents 95% of the 14-15 million GP consultations for backpain per year) ".backpain ...11 million working days and an estimated £5bn are lost to industry every year."

I needed an activity to improve posture - thoracic flexion with a second rib dysfunction now all fine, only took 3 months of regular practice. I wanted to stand more symmetrically and lie on my right, both of which I can now do successfully. I can also find the head rest in my car which used to be a problem due to thoracic flexion.

Yoga gives you the belief that you don't have to degenerate into old age, you can keep your mobility, flexibility and strength and in my case improve upon it. I have reduced neck pain and driving the car (reversing) is a lot easier, also reduced back pain. I can put things in the dishwasher more easily, it used to hurt my back before.
Jane King 36-45 Lecturer in Accounting

Released my spinal stiffness.
Pamela Parker 46-55 Corporate Sales Exec. Apartments in Oxford.

Returning to Post Natal Fitness

It has given me better posture back, having fallen into bad habits of slouching since the birth of my daughter. I have practised Hatha Yoga for some time but since discovering you, there's no going back. It's the type of energetic yoga practice I've been looking for!
Francine Rodrigues 26-35 Public Relations

Much stronger pelvic floor, much better for this than the exercises prescribed after child birth. Post natal women should be prescribed yoga instead.
JK 36-45 Lecturer

My back and shoulder feel much less tense generally. After having three children the ability to control my pelvic floor is a great advantage! I also find using the locks can help give energy and lightness. My upper body strength has really increased.

Increasing self esteem

Yoga leads to greater body satisfaction and fewer symptoms of eating disorders than traditional aerobic exercise like jogging or using cardio machines.
A study published in the May 2005 issue of Psychology of Women Quarterly

Lead author Jennifer Daubenmier

There is a sense of achievement in being able to do things not attempted since childhood. Makes you feel less old, and somehow more in control of things. Better able to cope with stressful situations (better breathing) and better deportment makes you feel better. I think yoga helps with weight control and cutting back on alcohol, perhaps (because) you feel stronger.
Jane King 36-45 Lecturer in Accounting

I was particularly surprised and pleased how rapidly my waist whittled down to a 12 from a 16! The classes energize me and make me feel good about myself and my body.
Helen Rappaport 46-55 Freelance writer and translator.

Yoga has increased my awareness generally in how I use my body in everyday life. It has made me more positive and confident in my approach. It has made me look after myself better.
JB Professional Potter 36-45

Certainly my body (has changed). I think I look at least 5 years younger because of it, and I've stopped the downward slide of age! I am also much more supple.

Lesley Buckeridge 36-45 Director Fishawack Comminucations

In my own experience anxiety manifests as a shortness of breath and the apparent inability to inhale enough air. Since learning yoga breathing techniques I have overcome these sensations. Only once has this failed to relax then (I) used the relaxation technique of individual muscle relaxation (which) helped the condition. A recent use for these techniques came about due to pre-exam nerves. Not only did it help with revision but enabled me to remain calm for the exams.
Sally Hollis Student

The yoga classes are fun, always look forward to them and finish very calm. Best nights sleep of the week after yoga.

Reducing high blood pressure and relieving asthma

Just to say thank you for help and encouragement. I went to the doctor's about an hour ago for my three monthly review and my blood pressure was the lowest it has been for a very long time. He now does not want to see me for a year!

After a debilitating affliction (plantar fasciitis) I gained 3 stone in weight which led to high blood pressure..with the yoga breathing I found I could 'cheat' the blood pressure machine. Now when I feel my blood pressure is going up, I go somewhere, sit quietly and do the yoga breathing deeply and it goes down again.
